TRANSMISSION LA: THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON ART

This past weekend was super jam-packed and full of excitement. One of the things we did was catch the Transmission LA show during it’s closing weekend at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Little Tokyo. The Geffen is home to the most exciting and interactive installation shows. Art in the Streets, Ecstasy: In and About Altered States and ©Murakami have been amongst my favorite in recent years. Added to that list, is now, Transmission LA.  Curated by Beastie Boy, Mike D; the show is an interactive feast for the senses.

Mike D gives a tour through the installation and explains his vision for the exhibit

The installation by Ben Jones was nuts!! This is the hallway that lead….

…to this insane room that transported you into a crazy moving video game-esque environment-complete with driving sound effects!

I loved this colorful projection by Takeshi Murata.

This mirror by Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe caught my eye.

Artist Sage Vaughn had an entire room dedicated to his work. I fell in love with these pieces. I’m a sucker for drips.

I was most excited to see these Pinwheels by Ara Peterson and Jim Drain. They are HYPNOTIC! They all spin!

Robert McKinley designed coffee bar.

I love going to all sorts of art exhibits and gallery shows. I always leave feeling totally inspired.

I’VE BEEN PERCOLATING

My kinda Klimt-ish carousel

I was wandering the virtual isles of the App Store and came across Percolator. It’s a photo app that transforms images so they appear to be made up of a variety of circles, rings, bubbles, and even stars! The app takes on the theme of a coffee maker that brews different filters. There are so many possible variations; it’s kept me occupied for hours. Check out my images below along with the recipe used to create the effects.

Recipe for image above:

Grind: Fine (Smallest Circles & Effect: Saturate), Brew: Treble (3/4 Pic & Darkest Blended Circles), Serve: Light & Sweet (Candy Stripe Tone & Smooth Texture)

Become a constellation

Recipe:

Grind: Fine (Average Circles & Effect: Auto Adjust), Brew: Full of Stars (1/2 Pic & Full Blended Circles), Serve: Black (Sad Hipster Tone & Paper Cup Texture)

That’s me made up of rings

Recipe:

Grind: Fine (Smallest Circles & Effect: Saturate), Brew: Rings (No Pic & Full Blended Circles), Serve: Black (Cross-Perc Tone & Smooth Texture)

Circles

Recipe:

Grind: Medium (Average Circles & Effect: Auto Adjust), Brew: Color Gels (1/2 Pic & Full Blended Circles), Serve: Stirred (Cross-Perc Tone & Smooth Texture)

What are your favorite photo apps?!

COLOR ON GLASS, FROSTING ON CAKE, AND YARN I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH

Anything translucent fascinates me. I love the effect of light shining though color. I had painted/scribbled/drawn on these glass panels I had, and put them up to light and other items. The color combinations are straight out of a kaleidoscope.

Within a span  of two weeks, I baked three different batches of cupcakes. That is not common for me…but I started to like it. I experimented with different food colorings in my icing and different frosting techniques. No two were alike! The blue with coconut were my favorite.

I have no idea what to do with this crazy ball of yarn!? But it was colorful and shiny and it screamed “take me home”. So I did… I don’t even think it is yarn, but I found it in the knitting isle.

KRINK-Y ELEPHANTS

Lately, I’ve been playing with the Krink app. It allows you to draw and create drips using a variety of different Krink inks and markers.

Check out those real/fake drips!  I like using a picture in the background and adding krink on top of the image…it comes out more interesting that way. The app is kinda cool-but not nearly as fun (or messy)  as the real thing. I’m yet to try it on the iPad; it’s probably a lot more user friendly on a bigger screen.

PANTONE, POM POMS AND FEATHERS

I spent most of my weekend locked up by myself working on some new Hysteric Haus designs. It was pretty frustrating, but I was able to come up with sketches of some new stuff. Picking colors is always the hardest part..there are so many possibilities! Sometimes the Pantone book makes it more difficult….

I did happen to notice that my nail polish, “Did It On ‘Em” by OPI is a close match to Pantone 381 U.

Playing with color combinations.

I like to use pom poms as a color reference due to their texture. They can help me visualize how something may look in material form, as opposed to a coated Pantone chip.

I have also been using feathers to help me see color in a more textural way. Plus, it makes things more exciting!

FASHION, FAFI AND THE HARAJUKU BARBIE

A few things I am currently obsessed with:

So much is right with this video. Meadham Kirchhoff keep blowing my mind. The color, sparkle, texture…if I were in that room I would have been brought to tears.

I was actually almost brought to tears when I found out that one of my favorite artists ever, Fafi, is coming to Gallery Nucleus in April! What makes this so much more exciting, is that fact that she’s appearing in Alhambra (down the street from my Abuelita’s house)!  She’s promoting the release of her long awaited book, The Carmine Vault.  I’m totally going to Fosselman’s afterwards.

Also, I’ve been playing this new Nicki Minaj track repeatedly and obsessively.

LISTENING TO COLOR

Figure at Night Guided by the Phosphorescent Tracks of Snails

Joan Miro 1940

I’ve been listening to classical music lately during my hellish commutes through Southern California. I find it turns an average, uninteresting drive into an epic journey through time.  I live in a fantasy land in my brain and orchestrated music, classical or not,  always gets my imagination flowing. A mild form of synesthesia kicks in and sounds turn into colors and colors turn into feelings. It’s quite overwhelming at times; but awesome nonetheless.

On my drive the other day, listening to  KUSC 91.5, they played Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Being a  mild Woody Allen fan, I instantly thought of the opening scene from Manhattan. Once I got over that imagery, as cliché as it sounds, I got lost in the music. The moodiness of the composition evoked  shades of blue, violets and grays.

This  got me thinking about music in relation to our designs for Hysteric Haus. So I asked myself: If my brand were a musical act, who would it be? What does Hysteric Haus sound like?

Organized chaos comes to mind. Chaos along the lines of Boredoms, OOIOO, Deerhoof, M.I.A. .

Experimental/psychedelic/tribal/colorful cacophony.

Maybe that’s a bit ambitious-but I like the way it sounds.

HYSTERIC HAUS THROUGH IPHONE

I was going through my iPhone photos and came across these random images from the past year. Most of them have been altered using the  Picture Show app. I’m not really into Instagram. It makes pictures look too dull for my taste. These pictures are a pretty accurate look into the world of Hysteric Haus.
